What is Random Access Memory (RAM) ?

RAM, or random access memory, is vital for every device, from smartphones to computers to gaming consoles. Without RAM, everything on any device will be a lot slower. On the other hand, insufficient RAM for the game or application you’re trying to run may slow things down or stop them from ever running.

What exactly is RAM precisely? In short, it’s a fast component that temporarily stores all the data the device requires both now and soon. It is a breeze to access data. RAM is swift, unlike hard drives, which are slower yet provide long-term storage.

Short-term memory

RAM is the device’s memory for the short term. It temporarily stores (remembers) all the current applications running on the device, as do all OS-specific applications, browser applications, image editors, and games you’re currently playing.

RAM stops the CPU from digging into the slower storage of the device, similar to the hard drive or an SSD (SSD) — each time you launch the creation of a new tab in your browser or load a new opponent to shoot. Although storage can be fast compared to drives from years past, they’re significantly slower than RAM.

The data stored in RAM is accessible from any component capable of an identical speed. Since it is a hardwired link to the computer, there’s no absolute latency with the cabling or connection.

RAM will only be able to remember some things. However, it does remember everything for a while. It’s a “volatile” technology, meaning that once power is lost, it loses all information. It’s perfect for handling the many fast-paced tasks your device throws at you daily.

It’s also why storage systems such as HDDs and SSDs are needed. In contrast to RAM, they hold the information even when the device shuts off.

Different kinds of RAM

RAM is a generic term, much like “memory,” and covers various types.

“RAM” or “memory” generally refers to dynamic random access memory (DRAM) or, more specifically, in modern systems, the term synchronous dynamic random access memory ( SDRAM). The term doesn’t have any significance beyond technicalities, but it’s essential to know that these terms can be used interchangeably.

The most commonly used type of RAM available currently is DDR4. However, older models may utilize DDR3 or DDR2. The numbers represent the generation of RAM, every generation offering higher speeds due to more bandwidth, resulting in more megahertz (MHz) ratings. Each generation has physical modifications, which means they cannot be interchangeable.

Another popular term in video games is VRAM (video RAM). Although it was initially a stand-alone technology component, today VRAM is used to indicate dedicated memory in the GPU. For consoles that play games, it is also a reference to memory on the system; however, in both cases, it is associated with memory reserved for the GPU. RAM is crucial for graphics DDR, also known as GDDR, typically uses a generational designation such as GDDR6.

Modern graphics cards utilize GDDR6. However, certain graphics cards could utilize a different form of VRAM known as HBM, also known as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM or HBM2) and HBM2e). It is a unique form of performance, but it’s expensive, and supply issues limit widespread adoption.

What is the importance of RAM?

RAM is a significant aspect. A lack of RAM can cause slow performance, but smaller devices such as tablets and smartphones only require high-end gaming desktops. But putting in massive amounts or using the most potent ratings doesn’t mean the device will perform at lightning speed. Keep in mind that RAM is just one part of the whole calculation.

But having enough RAM is going to have an impact. A RAM that’s not bargain-basement-priced slow is also an excellent idea, particularly for an intricate video or image editing job and games with limited CPU.

However, when it is about improving the overall performance, consider the associated cost. A more powerful processor or graphics card can generally impact the overall speed of a PC more than upgrading the memory. But, specific CPUs, such as AMD’s Ryzen line, can gain essential benefits when upgrading the memory.

Moving from an old hard drive to one with an SSD is an enormous step in an appropriate direction. The switch from a hard drive to an SSD can speed up the fastest storage device by a substantial amount. It is a huge factor in making your PC appear faster.

Like any other computing device, the slow component most often hinders performance. This means that slow memory could slow down the device if it’s the slowest component of the configuration. If you’re not doing anything demanding, anything just a bit more than the minimum is acceptable. A little more than the required amount is sufficient if it’s not at the lowest point of your barrel. A number just above the required amount required for your equipment is sufficient.

Think about various aspects such as size, speed, and power. Certain varieties also come with LEDs with RGB lighting.
