A DOS disk operating system can be described as an operating system that is run by the disk drive. It could be used to refer to a specific collection of operating system disks but most often MS-DOS, an abbreviation for Microsoft DOS.

The operating system (OS) is the program that manages a computer’s peripheral and hardware devices and permits other software programs to work. The first computers in the 40s and 50s didn’t include disk drives. The computers were hardwired to perform specific calculations.

In the future, computers will be capable of storing instructions into the memory of computers using punch cards and magnetic tapes. The memory of computers was limited. When the instructions for controlling the computer were transferred to disk drives that were an internal HDD, Floppy disk, or an internal HDD, it was regarded as cutting-edge technology.

DOS can also be described as a variety of like command-line disk operating systems. The earliest computers, including Apple II, the Commodore 64, Atari 800, and Apple II, all featured an operating system for disks, which included Commodore Business Machines DOS, Atari DOS, and Apple DOS as well as Apple DOS. DOS/360 was an operating system designed specifically to run on IBM mainframes and was first introduced in 1966. However, it was not a part of the 8086-based DOS in the 1980s.

What is the way the disk operating system function?

When a computer is turned on, it can go through various processes known as the boot procedure. If you have a computer that runs the disk operating system, the following steps are typical:

  1. A read-only memory (ROM) bootstrap loader scans the Master Boot Record and then transfers control to it.
  2. A boot recording loads the operating system in memory and becomes the computer’s controller.
  3. The computer transfers the data on a magnetic disk into its main memory, Random Access Memory.
  4. It also sends data to devices connected directly to computers, like printing devices or printers.
  5. The computer can provide various interfaces for application programming to programs, such as input and output of characters ( I/O) memory management, loading of programs and ending, and taking input from the user via the keyboard.
  6. The OS also has a file management feature that manages and organizes the reading and writing of files on storage. The files are organized into hierarchical directories, subdirectories, and files.

DOS features

Some of the capabilities and limitations of operating systems that use disks can be found in the following.

Features

  • Command-line interface ( CLI ). It is not equipped with a GUI and cannot allow input from a mouse. It’s a text-based interface where every command is entered in the text on the command line prompt.
  • Administration. A disk operating system manages the computer’s files, I/O system, and memory.

Limitations

  • Does not have security built-in. It does not provide built-in security for the ownership of files and permissions.
  • There are no multitasking or multi-users. It also does not support multitasking, multi-users, or multitasking. It’s only able to run one program at a single time. However, it gives an immediate access point to the standard I/O system and the hardware.
  • An arduous user interface. The CLI, where users have to enter commands, requires users to recall commands needed to run programs as well as perform various OS tasks. This makes it difficult for beginners to learn how to use it. For instance, typing the command cd directory_name will change the directories to the directory name, and using the command dir lists the contents of the directory currently in use.
